Expanded from the Serendipity City theme of FutureEverything, Slanted Cities and Slip Roads is a programme of short films set in non-spaces and the terrain of the in-between. Taking inspiration from suburbs, industrial estates and the glimpses witnessed when traversing urban landscapes, the programme meanders through graphic abstraction, dutch surrealism and offbeat black humour.
Without You
Dir: Tal Rosner (UK)
5 mins, 2008
Without You is a visual exploration of London's industrial suburbia. Following colours and surfaces into abstraction, the film reveals the complexity of apparently simple forms.
The Insurrectionists Progression
Dir: Sylvie Zijlmans and Hewald Jongenelis (NL)
15 mins, 2010
Father and son, travelling across the country on their Segways, relate to the scenery, the things they see, and each other. The artists Sylvie Zijlmans and Hewald Jongenelis made this beautiful sample of Dutch surrealism as part of the All Suits Project.
LoopLoop
Dir: Patrick Bergeron (Canada)
4 mins, 2009
Using animation, sounds warping and time shifts this
video runs forwards and backwards looking for forgotten details, mimicking the
way memories are replayed in the mind.
LoopLoop is made from a sequence captured in a train going to Hanoi
in Vietnam. I filmed the houses boarding the railroad. The 1000 images of this
sequence have been stitched into one long panoramic image. Into this long still
image, I integrated other moving elements and builted smooth transitions over
it. LoopLoop is a video
loop.
Attempt at Perpetual Motion
Dir: David Prince (USA)
2.5 mins, 2009
From the forest to the shopping mall, craft meets technology and the impossible is realised.
David Prince is a sculptor, explorer, lumberjack, amateur scientist, community advocate, and inventor, creating artworks in a wide variety of materials and media. His subject matter frequents the topics of ecology, heroism, civic engagement, and impermanence. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and is a part-time nomad, living and working from his minivan-studio.
The Art Show: Stepford Lives
Dir: Jacques Peretti (UK)
30 mins, Beta SP, 2002
Jacques Peretti bleakly comic film charts a day in the life of Graham, Sally and Magda, three fictional characters living in and around the fictional `village' of Harton Wick. Harton Wick is a new development with a fake history which was written by an advertising copywriter. Anonymous and secure, designed for individuals with little or no individuality, Harton Wick represents a frightening vision of suburban life.
