Film Screening: Bricks and Mortar

7pm, Friday 14 May, Free

Copperface Jacks, beneath the Palace Hotel, corner of Oxford Street and Whitworth Street.

Curated by Mat Fleming and Debbie Bower of Newcastle’s Star and Shadow cinema, Bricks and Mortar is a selection of films that focus on urban architecture and planning and seek out hidden, shifting meanings sometimes by destructive means.

John Smith’s Blight witnesses homely interiors exposed violently to the elements. Locations between towerblocks preoccupy Karen Mirza and Brad Butler's intense The Space Between, whilst Guy Sherwin, known for his mesmerizing expanded cinema works, focus on the dynamic use of space beneath an American freeway. The programme also features David Leister and a rare 16mm print, brought over from Paris, of Gordon Matta-Clark's breathtaking Conical Intersect in which he carves a building high above a curious Paris street.  The programme will also feature a live performance by Mat Fleming with 16mm projection.

Gordon Matta-Clark: Conical Intersect, 1975, 18mins

Guy Sherwin: Under the Freeway, 1995, 16mins

David Leister: Painting the Town, 1998, 6mins

Bricks and Mortar was compiled from a residency that was part of the artists in residence programme at the Scottish Pavilion in the Venice Biennale. The residency was developed and delivered through a partnership between Scottish Sculpture Workshop and The Hospitalfield Trust.
