Once again this year, there is a strong representation from Japan across all strands of the festival programme: Art, Music & Ideas.
Japanese culture has had a big influence on Futuresonic in many ways, from their fabulous, unique embrace of all things digital, to Japanese animation, music and popular culture. In 2006 Futuresonic presented with Toshio Iwai and Yamaha the first full live performance of TENORI-ON, the success of which led Yamaha the following year to stage the world-wide launch in London and Manchester in association with Futuresonic.
Last year I was invited to Japan to present my artwork Loca and give a talk. I hung out for a while in Tokyo and met many people who have been an inspiration to me, such as Maywa Denki, Toshio Iwai, Yukiko Shikata, Minoru Hatanaka, Fumihiko Sumitomo and Yu Nishibori from Yamaha. Japan Media Art Festival invited Futuresonic to be their featured international festival next year, and conversations have taken place regarding presenting Maywa Denki’s incredible live show for the first time in the UK.
This year, Japan Foundation and the City of Sendai kindly invited me back, to be their international guest speaker on the impact of the Futuresonic festival in Manchester. Again I met a lot of inspirational people, and laid plans for some new collaborations which hopefully will come to light in 2010 and 2011. Sendai is launching a new festival called Occur, which I think it going to be excellent, and I recommend to everyone to visit 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa from where I met a curator doing fabulous work on participatory art.
At Futuresonic 2009 we did not plan a particular focus on Japan, but it is unsurprising that artists from Japan are strongly represented.
In Making Fun Serious, Yamaha have collaborated with the Royal College of Art on this exhibition of h
ighly innovative and often unusual musical instruments and inter faces, presented here by Futuresonic for the first time.
Since the 1960’s Fujiko Nakaya has created work exploring the interface between nature and technological society. Futuresonic is presenting documentation of Fogfalls #47670 ‘Tales Of Ugetsa’ & Foggy Forest.
The title From Japan With Love is the name of a 100% Genki! music event, featuring four fresh and exciting acts from Japan, showcasing a taste of Japan’s borderless youth culture to Manchester.
Yuri Suzuki is presenting two projects, Cybernetic Love in the Social Technologies Summit programme, and Graffiti Radio, a music project played by using a mobile phone to scan QR code graffiti (two-dimensional bar-codes) sprayed by the artist in the street with a stencil.
A partnership with Japan Media Arts Festival, a similar festival in Japan to Futuresonic, has led to the screening of award winning animation from the recent 12th Japan Media Arts Festival, plus prize winners from the entire programme including Art, Entertainment and Manga categories.

日本より愛を込めて。そして再び・・・。
今年も再びアート・ミュージック・アイデアの祭典、Futuresonicでは日本人アーティストによるアート作品展示、ライブ、講演のプログラムを予定しています。
デ ジタル・カルチャーに関する全ての分野におけるその革新性や独特な憧憬に始まり、ジャパニーズ・アニメーション、音楽からポピュラー・カルチャーに至るま で日本文化はありとあらゆる形でFuturesonicに多大な影響を与えてきました。遡れば2006年にFuturesonicはメディア・アーティス トの岩井俊雄氏、YAMAHAと共に『TENORI-ON』を使用した初のライブ・パフォーマンスを発表し、そこでのコラボレーションの成功が後にロンド ンとマンチェスターで開催されたTENORI-ONの世界発表イベントの共催へと繋がりました。
また昨年は私は自らのアート・プロジェクトであるLocaの発表と講演の為に日本に招かれ、その際の短い東京滞在期間中に明和電機、岩井俊雄氏、四方幸子氏、畠中実氏、 住友文彦氏、YAMAHAの西堀佑氏等多くの人々と出会い多大なインスピレーションを得ました。結果、明和電機の英国初となるライブ・ショーケースを企画 することとなり、現在来年に向け準備・調整中で今後の進展が期待されます。さらに文化庁メディア芸術祭とFuturesonicとの間にはこの時の私の日 本滞在を機に新たな協力関係が生まれ、2010年度のメディア芸術祭では我々が日本国外のメディア・アート・フェスティバルとして招待を受け、プレゼン テーションを行うこととなりました。
今 年に入ってからも国際交流基金と仙台市が私を再び日本に招いてくれたので、都市文化に関するシンポジウムのゲスト講演者として、Futuresonicが マンチェスターの都市に与えた影響をお話しすることが出来ました。前回同様、この時の日本滞在でも多くの人々からインスピレーションを受け、新たなコラボ レーションの計画も立ち上がりました。それらのプロジェクトは2010年、もしくは2011年に日の目を見る事になると思います。仙台市は新たに 『Occur』というフェスティバルを立ち上げようとしています。きっと素晴らしいものとなるでしょう。またこの時の滞在中に私は金沢21世紀美術館を訪 れ、素晴らしい参加型アート作品を生み出しているキュレーターにも会う事が出来ました。金沢21世紀美術館は私のお気に入りです。もし機会があれば是非訪 れてみて下さい。お勧めします。
さて、その様な素晴らしい日本滞在の後の今回のFuturesonic 2009ですが、当然ながら日本のみに焦点を絞っている訳ではありません。しかし結果として多くの日本人アーティストが取り上げることとなりました。
『Making Fun Serious』と題された企画展示ではYAMAHAがRoyal College of Artとコラボレーションして、革新的且つ独創的な楽器・インターフェイスの発表を行います。この企画展はFuturesonicが初公開となります。
60年代から「自然」と「科学技術社会」の接点に挑む作品を発表し続けている中谷芙二子氏の『霧の森』、『雨月物語ー懸崖の滝』のドキュメンタリー映像も展示されます。
こ のブログ・エントリーのタイトルにもなっている『日本より愛を込めて（英題：From Japan With Love）』は実は『100% Genki!』という4組の若く野心的な日本人ミュージシャンが出演する音楽イベントの名前にもなっています。彼らは間違いなくマンチェスターに限界を知 らない日本の若者文化を見せつけてくれることでしょう。
アー ティストの鈴木有理氏は2作品の発表を行います。一つは『Social Technologies Summit』シンポジウムでの『Cybernetic Love』という作品で、もう一つは彼により街にスプレー缶とステンシルで描かれたQRコードを携帯電話で読み取ることで音楽を奏でる『Graffiti Radio』というプロジェクトです。
英 国におけるFuturesonic同様、日本においてデジタル・カルチャーをリードする文化庁メディア芸術祭とのパートナーシップの一環として、本年度の 文化庁メディア芸術祭短編アニメーション部門の受賞作品並びに優秀作品のシアター上映会、またその他のアート、エンターテイメント、マンガ部門の受賞作品 のハイライト紹介もプログラムには含まれています。
以上が今年Futuresonicが取り上げる日本関係のプログラムです。今後もFuturesonicと日本との関係は長く続いていくことでしょう。ご期待下さい。
